How the Covid-19 Crisis Is Affecting Our Summer Events

Watch for details about the 2021 season of the 55th Shindig on the Green and the 94th Mountain Dance and Folk Festival.

In lieu of the annual gatherings of our loyal fans and performers, the Folk Heritage Committee is planning several streaming events to celebrate the 54th Shindig on the Green® and the 93rd Mountain Dance and Folk Festival®. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic makes mass gatherings in person impossible so we will present some first-of-its-kind variations on these traditional events.

As summer is approaching, we will modify our long-standing traditions with the safety of our fans, performers, volunteers, and community in mind. Social distancing measures are a priority, and we will truly miss the warmth of your friendship and camaraderie. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate the new normal of public safety mandates.

As a thank you to everyone who has attended and supported us for decades, these broadcasts will be presented at no charge through links on our website, folkheritage.org. We are thrilled to be able to bring a new version of these historical events to music lovers and appreciate our sponsors for their continuing support during these challenging times.

Follow us on our website, folkheritage.org, and our Facebook page, Shindig on the Green and Mountain Dance and Folk Festival, for upcoming information about how to tune in to this year's events. Until then, thank you for your continued support and please stay safe and stay well.

The Mountain Dance and Folk Festival was founded by Bascom Lamar Lunsford as a means for people to share and understand the beauty and dignity of the Southern Appalachian music and dance traditions that have been handed down through generations in western North Carolina. He saw the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival grow to be the oldest gathering of its kind in the nation and it continues in this way, a platform for the talented of the high country lying between the Great Smoky and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Since 1928, the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival has served a crucial role in raising awareness and understanding of the vitality and importance of Southern Appalachian culture throughout the region, nation and world. Bascom Lunsford’s mission was to present the finest of the Appalachian ballad singers, string bands and square dance teams for education and entertainment. The songs and dances shared at this event echo centuries of Scottish, English, Irish, Cherokee and African heritage found in the valleys and coves between the Great Smokies and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Lunsford’s was the first dubbed a folk festival, and he later consulted with many communities across the country interested in organizing similar festivals.
